Prickly Pear Cactus and
Heuchera or Amber Waves

Cathy, a friend of Lewis, brought him a sprig of prickly pear cactus from her Trousdale County farm in Middle Tennessee. I did not know that a prickly pear cactus could survive outside in the sometimes very cold winter nights of Middle Tennessee. But our small spring is now about 2 and a half feet tall and has spread in the garden. It lives next to several other cactus that Lew bought at the home depot. Some have to winter over in pots but the native cactus has flourished through the last three winters.

Growing among the cactus in our front flower bed are Heuchera. A beautiful and delicate flower with common names like Blushing Bells, Coral Bells, and Amber Waves. They burst into many different colored leaves with mixtures of yellow ochre, golden lemon shades, and the other varieties that are bright green with a twist of lime tint.

Great cactus sketch Judy! Seems some cacti are just survivors. I even have some prickly pear in Wisconsin that survive the winter just fine. Always love your nature sketches.

Hey Judy, Prickly Pear lives outside here in Indiana. I don't think you can kill it. I saw a clump blooming beautifully but didn't take time to photograph it. I love your drawing. Happy Cactus Monday.

What a goergeous drawing/painting!!! Very soft and very detailed! I love it. I had never heard of a Zig white oil-based pen. Sounds perfect for highlighting details...just what one would want. I have been suffering with what would possibly be able to do that, and now I know! Thanks!
Happy CM!

Julie,
I just discovered this oil-based ZIG pen about a month ago. My daughter, the trained artist, bought it for me. It has a fine felt tip. As you use it be careful to test the ink every time before you touch it to your painting. You have to press the felt tip into the ink base. It wants to "puddle" so it takes a little practice. It is the very last thing I do when the piece is completely finished. You cannot come back with water color on top of it. The marks are glossy--gives it an unusual texture. But I love using it where you want white on top of dark watercolors!
